Soil

The sweet scent in the forest is the smell of soil being made by plant matter breaking down. The process releases organic compounds that have been proven to calm stress and boost immune systems. The breakdown – from leaf to soil, for example – takes hundreds of years, and is aided by millions of tiny creatures per cubic inch. These paintings portray a single forest floor area over the course of a year, a small appreciation for life-giving forces.
